District to Offer Breakfast After the Bell
As we approach the first day of the 2023-24 school year, we would like to share some important information about meal service for each of our schools.
Selah meets the requirements to continue to operate under the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) structure for meal service, allowing for meals to continue to be provided at no cost for the upcoming school year.
A requirement to utilize the CEP structure is to implement a Breakfast after the Bell Program beginning the 2023-24 school year. There are several benefits of offering Breakfast after the Bell (BAB). Breakfast after the Bell gives all students the opportunity to eat a nutritious meal at the beginning of the day. By increasing availability, BAB programs produce higher participation rates than traditional breakfast service. Increased breakfast participation is linked to improved academic achievement, reduced disruptive behavior, and reduced rates of absence and tardiness.
What does this mean for each of our schools?
All three elementary schools (RL, JCP, and SIS) will offer breakfast after the bell and students will eat in classrooms. As such, breakfast will be provided during the instructional day. The traditional breakfast service will not be provided before the bell as it was in the past.
Selah Middle School will also provide a breakfast after the bell option in addition to breakfast served before school begins. This will allow students the opportunity to eat breakfast in the classroom if they missed breakfast offered before the bell or were not yet ready to eat prior to the start of the school day. There will be no changes at Selah High School. SHS will continue to offer breakfast before the school day begins and a second chance breakfast opportunity after the bell.
Please let us know if you have any questions. You may contact Laurie Ozanich, Director of Nutrition Services at lauraozanich@selahschools.org or Chris Scacco, Associate Superintendent for District Operations at chrisscacco@selahschools.org if you have any questions. Thank you!
