SHS Teams Crowned Academic Champs!
There is a lot to cheer about in the Selah High School athletics program as both the girls’ basketball squad and the dance team were crowned State Champions by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) for having the highest grade point averages in their respective sports at the 2A level this winter season.
It was a slam-dunk for the Selah High School Lady Viks Varsity Basketball Team after being named academic champions among 2A girls’ basketball programs. In earning recognition for the 2023 campaign, the varsity team, under the leadership of head coach Raymond Navarro, proved they were not only successful on the hardwood floor, but in the classroom as well, as they posted an impressive grade point average of 3.920.
The Selah High School dance team is also groovin’ to the beat as they too were crowned academic champions for having the highest grade point average among 2A squads. In high-kicking to the recognition, Viking dancers excelled in academics just as much as they dominated the dance moves, as they recorded a 3.760 grade point average. The team is coached by Bethany and Shawna Treat.
The WIAA and Gesa Credit Union sponsor the Washington State High School Scholastic Awards Program, which recognizes student athletes for academic excellence. Each athletic season, the WIAA State Academic Championship is presented to the sport-specific team with the highest grade point average in each high school division.
The academic championship highlights the success of Selah’s student-athletes and athletic programs, which have earned academic championships in previous years as well.
Congratulations to the Lady Viks Girls Basketball Team and the Selah High School Dance Team for being named 2A academic state champs! We are proud of you!
