District Closed to Non-Resident Students in Grades 1-8
September 15, 2022
Having completed the first three weeks of the 2022-2023 school year, Selah students have returned to classrooms and the quality learning environments that will provide them with life-long knowledge and skills.
However, because of increased enrollment, and being over projection at some grade levels, the Selah School District has made the decision to close to non-resident families with students in Grades 1-8 and Selah Online ALE. The District remains open to non-resident students if other criteria are met at Kindergarten, and Grades 9-12, including the Big Picture Learning Program.
Each year as the District evaluates its enrollment numbers, it determines monthly which grades it must close due to being at maximum capacity, and routinely closes some levels. With the first enrollment report of the new academic year now being finalized, the District has calculated its beginning of the year student population at its schools and realizes it is at maximum capacity for some buildings, prompting the closure of out-of-district students in Grades 1-8. Although the District is closed to non-resident students at these grade levels, it is always open to serve its learners residing within Selah School District boundaries.
In Selah, the District takes pride in its strong educational reputation and understands that non-resident families want to be included in our system. However, it must ensure that the needs of its resident students are met first, while also taking into consideration building capacity related to enrollment and the financial effects on Selah Schools’ resources. It has always been the District’s practice that non-resident students will be granted placement only if space allows at the requested grade level and only permitted for one-year intervals.
Enrollment numbers will continue to be evaluated on a monthly basis, at which time it will be determined if the District will reopen the closed grade levels, or have to close any further grades. Thank you for your understanding. If you have any questions, please contact 698-8000.
