ext leader.  In a unanimous vote, Kevin McKay, a 1983 Selah High School alumni, has been chosen by the Board to be the District’s next superintendent, pending successful contract negotiation.  Kevin will be the second McKay to lead Selah’s educational system, as his father Jack did so in the 1980’s.

McKay most recently held the superintendent’s position in the Sunnyside School District, where he led approximately 6,500 students and 850 staff and oversaw a learning environment that focused on individual student growth by providing quality instructional opportunities.  Prior to that, McKay served as the Zillah School District superintendent, after previously holding principalships in the District.  McKay began his educational career as a high school teacher in Sunnyside and said he has never lost his passion for teaching and learning and providing instruction, as well as supporting youth activities.

During the interview process, McKay expressed his interest in the Selah School District by highlighting its strengths as an educational entity. McKay expressed that he knows from experience that Selah has good people, an excellent educational system with exceptional learning facilities and a strong and prideful community which supports its schools.

McKay earned his superintendent credentials from Washington State University after completing his Masters of Education Administration at Heritage University.  McKay completed his Bachelors of Arts in Education at Central Washington University.

Selah School Board President, Jeff Hartwick, said McKay is a strong and proven leader who will continue to focus on quality educational opportunities while leading the District to new levels of learning for students.

“The Selah School Board would like to thank the three very qualified candidates who did an excellent job in the rigorous interview process,” said Hartwick.  Their energy and time verified the commitment they had to Selah Schools and the community.

“We are very excited to have selected Kevin McKay as our next superintendent.  With his leadership experience, we know he will continue to move our District forward by focusing on increasing the quality educational opportunities for all Selah students that will ensure high levels of learning, making them college and career ready.”

McKay will officially begin his tenure in Selah on July 1, when he takes over for current superintendent, Shane Backlund, who will transition to the position of deputy superintendent at ESD 105.
