Immigration Letter to Families

Dear Selah School District Families,

Selah School District is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all students and families, regardless of immigration status. As part of our ongoing efforts to ensure that every child feels supported and valued, we want to remind our community of important policies surrounding immigration enforcement in our schools.  Washington State law and Selah School District Policy 4300-Limiting Immigration Enforcement in Schools, provide protections for immigrant students.  In addition, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) provided guidance for all public schools in Washington-Protections for Immigrant Students in Washington’s K-12 Public Schools

Here are the key points from Policy 4300 and the OSPI Guidance:

  1. School district employees are prohibited from participating or aiding in immigration enforcement.
  2. School district employees cannot ask students about their immigration status, and they are not required to collect or report immigration-related information.
  3. Immigration authorities are generally not permitted to enter school property without prior approval from the school district and a valid court order or judicial warrant.
  4. The principal will be the point contact for all situations regarding immigration in the schools.

For more information, access here for Policy 4300 in English. See here for Policy 4300 in Spanish. Access here for the OSPI guidance. Also, for additional resources, see here.

Please know that your child’s safety and well-being are our top priorities, regardless of their background or immigration status. If you have any questions or need additional support, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s school or the district office.

Sincerely,

Kevin McKay, Superintendent
