SHS Journalists Unleash Their Writing Skills

Unleashing their writing skills, four Selah High School students were recognized in early August for their contributions to the Yakima Herald Republic’s Unleashed section, the teen journalism platform which appears each weekend in the newspaper. The recognition reflects the best work produced by the teen journalists during the past year.

The quartet of Viking students honored were: Indiana Hilmes, Cameron Pelson, Rosie Pandit, and Mallory Keller.

For her written work, Indiana Hilmes, an Unleashed veteran, was honored with a Four-Year Senior Award as well as was recognized for Best Editorial. Also, Indiana received awards for Best TV Review, Best Staff Bio, and she shared recognition for Best Team Coverage.

Cameron Pelson, a junior last year, was a first-year team member of Unleashed. Showcasing his journalism skills, Cameron was recognized with a shared award for Best Music Review.

Incoming junior, Mallory Keller was a first-year member of Unleashed as a sophomore. Highlighting her work, Mallory received a shared award for Best Music Review. Mallory was also honored with awards for the feature Best Four Questions, and shared the Best Team Coverage honor.

Rosie Pandit, a sophomore last school year, also served her inaugural Unleashed season. In recognition of her outstanding work, Rosie received the award for Best News Reporting and Best School Reporting. Additionally, Rosie earned the award for Highest Facebook Views for her introductory staff bio to the Unleashed team.

Also, the four-member Selah High School group received the Superstar School Award, which is presented to the students from a multi-represented high school, which recognizes a journalist team for their overall strong quality and quantity of article and photo contributions to Unleashed during the school year.
