• Cultivating Community Partnerships

Strong schools rely on strong communities.  The Selah School District is very thankful for the outpouring of community support in so many areas.  Recently, the district hosted the Viking Way Tours to give community members a backstage pass to learning.  Personally seeing what was happening in the classrooms provided an excellent opportunity for our patrons.

Opportunities outside of the classroom are made possible by our community partners too.  The Yakima Training Center continues to provide a strong partnership with field trips three times a year for our middle school students who are exploring career options.  With the focus of “One Mission, Many Careers” students are able to investigate both military and civilian careers with this hands-on experience.

Another opportunity utilizing our community members expertise is our Portrait of a Graduate Design team. This year the Selah School District is engaging a variety of stakeholders to help develop a Portrait of a Graduate, which will be a collective vision that articulates the community’s aspirations for all students in Selah.  Locally developed, the Portrait of a Graduate will be a profile of the 21st century skills important to our greater community which will be used to help provide strategic direction in the design of the overall educational experience for our students.  In a nutshell, it’s helping to create a vision of what we want for our kids when they leave our system and become contributors to our world.  This group of stakeholders has been meeting since October to develop our vision for Selah graduates.

As the saying goes, “teamwork makes the dream work.”  That motto is so true of our Selah community. From faith-based partners who have adopted a school, to Viking reading buddy volunteers, we would not be the same without our community partnerships.
